The Olympic Games will be hosted by a South American country for the very first time. After years of arduous efforts and planning, Brazil was finally declared able to host what is considered as the major international sporting event of the world.

As soon as the announcement was made, at the same time that we could see many people celebrating, supporting and welcoming this extraordinary sign of progress, we could also notice many other skeptical people expressing concerns about the event and the earnestness of its organization. For them, the better would be to keep one close eye on it in order to avoid lack of transparency and corruption on different levels.

Despite these highly controversial issues, the truth is that the competition for hosting an iconic sporting tournament, as the Olympics, became a political and economic battlefield between countries, very often with presidents and leaders of nations personally attending. The victory guarantees to the winner a tremendous boost to the economy and a spectrum of huge positive impacts. Aside the increased prestige and global influence in the international community, it means a great opportunity for businesses of all sizes and sectors.

One of the main reasons behind the International Olympic Committee decision on bringing the games to Brazil in 2016 is its successful history of hosting international sporting events - for instance, Pan American Games in 1963 and 2007, in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, respectively, with many thousands of competitors and spectators.

The concrete results of those events proved definitely Brazil's ability to carry out the demanding tasks involved in such significant competitions: political commitment and capacity to organize the infrastructure required, apart from other important qualities as natural taste for sports and numerous tourist attractions to seduce visitors.

Brazil and the host city, Rio de Janeiro, can benefit considerably from the Olympics in several ways. It is especially worth mentioning some major impacts on infrastructural investments and tourism (arrivals and receipts), not only during the games, but including the periods before and after the competitions. Thus, the impacts assessments should consider benefits from the construction phase of the project as improvements of venues, facilities and transport infrastructure that also will provide value for many years after the games, that is, the long-term legacy for future generations.

Additionally, one could expect significant effects on employment rates, with jobs creation in a range of areas - industries (that supply visitors, athletes, officials and media professionals needs) and services related to the increased tourism levels (hotels, restaurants and entertainment, for example).

With regard to specific matters more related to sports practice, there are other important benefits to be considered. For instance, the ambition for winning upgrades performances to meet the competition top levels and, consequently, stimulates investments on planning and technology development, among other substantial results.

The potential combination of all these effects is very complex to determine and assess through numbers, nevertheless the benefits are highly expected. Still, it may be too early to identify the sum of direct and indirect impacts from staging of the games, then we can only speculate on them. However, the fact is that Olympics are an amazing project full of opportunities from an economic, social and cultural point of view. Of course, it implies responsabilities and risks as well. After all, we live in the context of a global economy, where image and reputation are crucial questions. As a consequence, the whole world will be watching how our country deals with security, human rights and integration of civil society, just to mention some major issues.

I think that even with a great amount of investments, the return will be enough to pay any debt. The economy probably will hit up in a lot of sections, making the country grow increasingly.

Argue about the social problems that Brazil is facing for many years, and there are things more important to do, isn't face the issue in a practical way. These are chronic problems, with hard and gradual resolutions. Even if the government decides that tomorrow everything is gonna be different, will take several years to this social issue has some improvement.

However, the political ambient is extremely vicious, as everyone knows. With or without olympics, the social problems will not be resolved. Then, the best thing to do is promote the country's image with the event, promoting not just the market, but the image of Brazil for future investments.

I believe that, yes, Rio could greatly benefit from the Olympics. I agree with the argument that "It is especially worth mentioning some major impacts on infrastructural investments and tourism (arrivals and receipts), not only during the games, but including the periods before and after the competitions." - The infrastructure is the a long-lasting benefit, as we have seen in the South Africa's World Cup - larger airports, well-built metro system. Much of the spending on the Olympics will reflect on the daily lives of the city citizens after the event, but it is important not to invest in infrastructure that will probably not be used after the event, as has happened in Atlanta, Georgia (United States) in its Olympics.

I agree with the previous arguments. Rio de Janeiro is the Brazilian city most known internationally. In fact the Summer Olympics Games 2016 will increase this status. Increasing the number of tourists is just one of the benefits that the city will receive.

To receive people of the entire world the government will have to make many investments in the infrastructure of the city.

The Olympics Games will last one month only, however the benefits will for last decades.

Cassio and Vinicius

Since the IOC announced that Rio will host the 2016 Olympics, there has been a discussion about the main consequences it will bring the city. Some say that it will be good because it will project the image of the country abroad. The ones who say so are probably neglecting the cost of building behemoth venues which will not be utilized after the Olympic Games. The lessons of the Pan American Games were not learnt by Brazilian authorities, who think they can indulge themselves in spendthrifts financed by citizens. Our politicians are more worried about appearing side by side with sporting idols than about people’s welfare. The money which will be spent could easily be invested to help the needy by means of health or education.

Besides this, the so called “urbanization improvements” in the port area seem to intend to create a Disney type landscape which will further benefit real estate speculators. On the outskirts of Rio, people will continue to suffer from problems like the lack of sanitation and the precariousness of the public transport. Hence, these Games will only wide the gap between the rich and the poor, which can worse issues related to safety in the long run.

This imprudent adventure will look like a spectacle on the TV. Notwithstanding, the real costs and consequences of the Olympics must not be overlooked and its woes will become clearer after some few years.

It is a fact that the Olympic Games will bring thousands of tourists to our country. I believe people from every part of the city will benefit with the tourists’ arrival, even people from the outskirts of the city. A large number of jobs (formal and informal) will be created during the Olympic Games and the poor people will also benefit from them. It is true that the event will not affect directly the sanitation problem in the outskirts of the city, nevertheless, as an indirect result of the large profit Rio de Janeiro will make hosting the Olympics, the authorities may use this money to the improvement of the whole city. So, in a way or another everyone will benefit from the Olympic Games.

But, if all these tourists come to Rio, and the city does not able and does not have proper infrastructure to receive them, it could be a terrible flop, in a international event like Summer Olympics it could give to the world a worse image from Rio and from Brazil at all.

Even though both sides hold very solid arguments, I would tend to agree with the group which is against the theme.

Hosting the Olympics is a great responsibility and, of course, demands an extremely large amount of money. There are more important issues in our country that should be taken care of, such as Education, for instance.

This is a Olympic size waste of money. Like Soccer World Cup, the country will put an enormous amount of money on sites, premises and equipment that after the games there will be no use and will favor corruption. Besides that, if it is like World Cup, we will abdicate of our sovereignity, removing laws related to public health and taxes.

I agree with the arguments above. Since the country will waste a lot of money with the World Cup in 2014 and after that, another great event that is Olympics in 2016, a huge waste of money again. There are another priorities to waste this money.

Well, I really think than an image can worth more than 1000 words, and this one is amazing!

I know that in our society football is highly valued: it is one thing that Brazilians know how to do well and that is recognized worldwide! But I believe that the cost of the works of the Olympics and World Cup are things 'for English to see' would be better used to enhance the reality of the Brazilian people.

It will be a beautiful event in the neighborhood of the stadiums, in where competitions take place, but just turn the corner to see a poor and depressing reality.

It is not fair to use public money so that would please a few and the poverty coninue that exists behind the beauty.

Our hotels, restaurants and convenience stores will surely earn a lot from both events, but will be passed to the world an image that is not the reality of Brazil. We should worry more about what happens in our country than what the rest of the world think of us

It is true that the Olympic Games will bring a lot of visibility to Brazil and that people will come and spend their money here. However, it is also true that an economy such as ours, in a country with politicians such as ours, spending all the money that will be spent to create the infrastructure required for the Olympics might be a threat to Brazil. We have the example of Greece that is still struggling to pay the debt they had with the Olympics in 2004. At the end of the day, are we not taking the same risk?
